The Wrestler of the Week award is designed to highlight a wrestler who made the most of his or her opportunities in a given week. While great matches or memorable promos certainly help a wrestler win Wrestler of the Week, the ultimate decision will also include consistency through the week and bonus points for pulling off a task with a higher degree of difficulty.
4/9/14 Wrestler of the Week – Daniel Bryan
The Wrestler of the Week award fell by the wayside as we dealt with the fallout of Wrestlemania, the epic Post-Wrestlemania Raw, and the tragic death of the Ultimate Warrior. For the sake of posterity, I want to make the obvious choice and name Bryan the Wrestler of the Week for his memorable performances at Wrestlemania XXX. His match with HHH to open the show was the best match of the night as they came up with new ways to attack one another and dialed up the drama all the way to Bryan’s knee strike victory. The triple threat main event was not quite on the same level, but it was still very good. Bryan finally won the WWE World Heavyweight Title without dispute when he made Batista tap out to the Yes Lock. His celebrations at the end of the show and on Raw the next night were a long time coming and the tremendous fan reaction indicated that the timing worked out perfectly. Bryan now moves into a new phase in which The Authority will use its power to try to take the title away from him. There are plenty of ways for HHH and the other top level heels in the company to earn boos, so I am confident that Bryan will continue to excel in this new role.
