Recent News

  • 07/19/2018: Brandon Morrow (CHC) was placed on the 10-Day DL due to biceps inflammation. Pedro Strop, Carl Edwards Jr. and Steve Cishek will likely share the closer duties while Morrow is out. 
  • 07/19/2018: The Indians acquired Brad Hand from the Padres. It is not clear whether he’ll be a setup man, closer or if he’ll share the closer role with Cody Allen. Kirby Yates is expected to be the closer for the Padres. 
  • 07/15/2018: Ryan Tepera (TOR) was activated from the 10-Day DL. He’s expected to be back in the closer’s role on Sunday.
  • 07/14/2018: Arodys Vizcaino (ATL) was placed on the 10-Day DL due to shoulder inflammation. A.J. Minter and Dan Winkler are expected to handle closer duties. 
  • 07/13/2018: Shane Greene (DET) was activated from the 10-Day DL. He’s expected to be back in the closer’s role on Friday. 
  • 07/10/18: Sean Doolittle (WSH) was placed on the 10-Day DL due to toe inflammation, retroactive to July 7th. Kelvin Herrera will likely be the closer while Doolittle is out.
  • 07/03/18: Arodys Vizcaino (ATL) was activated from the 10-Day DL. He’s expected to return to the closer’s role immediately.

  • 07/02/18: Shane Greene (DET) was placed on the 10-Day DL with a strained shoulder. Joe Jimenez will be the closer in Greene’s absence. 
  • 06/30/18: Ryan Tepera (TOR) was placed on the 10-Day DL with elbow inflammation. Tyler Clippard is likely to get the bulk of save chances. 
  • 06/27/18: Brandon Morrow (CHC) was activated from the 10-Day DL. He is expected to return to his role as the primary closer.
  • 06/24/18: Arodys Vizcaino (ATL) was placed on the 10-Day DL with shoulder inflammation, retroactive to June 21st. A.J. Minter and Dan Winkler are expected to share the closer duties.
  • 06/20/18: Brandon Morrow (CHC) was placed on the 10-Day DL with back discomfort, retroactive to June 17th. Pedro Strop, Steve Cishek and Justin Wilson are closer options.
  • 06/19/18: Hunter Strickland (SF) will miss 6-8 weeks with a fractured hand. Sam Dyson will handle to the closing duties.
  • 06/18/18: The Nationals acquired Kelvin Herrera from the Royals. He is likely to fill a setup role with occasional save chances. The Royals’ closing situation is up in the air with a committee the most likely scenario. Brandon Maurer is their lone reliever with closing experience.
  • 06/17/18: Jeurys Familia (NYM) has been activated from the 10-Day DL. He is expected to right back in the mix as the team’s primary closer.
  • 06/11/18: Zach Britton (BAL) has been activated from the 60-Day DL. He is expected to be eased into the closer’s role.
  • 06/09/18: Darren O’Day (BAL) has been activated from the 10-Day DL. He could be in the mix for save chances along with Brad Brach.
  • 06/08/18: Jeurys Familia (NYM) was placed on the 10-Day DL due to shoulder discomfort. Robert Gsellman is the leading candidate for save opportunities.
  • 05/31/18: Kyle Barraclough was named the Marlins’ closer.
  • 05/30/18: Raisel Iglesias (CIN) was activated from the 10-Day DL. He will likely be back in the closer’s role on Wednesday.
  • 05/25/18: Alex Colome was traded from the Rays to the Mariners, where he will work in a setup role. Chaz Roe and Jose Alvarado are closing options for the Rays with Colome out of the picture.
  • 05/23/18: Raisel Iglesias (CIN) was placed on the 10-Day DL with a strained biceps, retroactive to May 20th. A closer committee is a possibility with Michael Lorenzen, just activated from the DL, in the mix for save chances with Amir Garrett, Jared Hughes and David Hernandez.
  • 05/14/18: Keynan Middleton (LAA) was placed on the 10-Day DL with a sprained elbow. He could require season-ending Tommy John surgery.
  • 05/13/18: Manager Gabe Kapler has confirmed that the Phillies do not have a set closer. Edubray Ramos picked up the save in Sunday’s game while Hector Neris is still in the mix for saves, along with Tommy Hunter, Seranthony Dominguez and Luis Garcia.
  • 05/09/18: Tyler Clippard (TOR) got the first save chance since Roberto Osuna was placed on Administrative Leave.
  • 05/09/18: Darren O’Day (BAL) has been placed on the 10-Day DL with a hyperextended elbow. He’s expected to return when eligible. Brad Brach got the save chance in Thursday’s game.
  • 05/09/18: Corey Knebel (MIL) has been activated from the disabled list. He pitched in the 7th inning with a 4-0 deficit in Thursday’s game.
  • 05/08/18: Roberto Osuna (TOR) has been placed on Administrative Leave after he was arrested on Tuesday morning for domestic assault.
  • 05/01/18: Keynan Middleton (LAA) was placed on the 10-Day DL with elbow inflammation. Justin Anderson appears to be the leading candidate for save chances with Cam Bedrosian, Jim Johnson and Blake Parker also in the mix.
  • 04/20/18: Darren O’Day (BAL) converted a save opportunity on Friday, three days after Brad Brach pitched in the 7th inning with his team down by one run. O’Day, at least, appears to be the Orioles’ top candidate for save chances.
  • 04/09/18: Greg Holland (STL) was recalled from the minors. It’s unclear if he’ll be the team’s closer on Monday or if he’ll be eased in with a few non-save appearances.
  • 04/06/18: The Brewers have placed Corey Knebel (MIL) on the 10-Day DL with a hamstring injury. He’s expected to miss at least 4-6 weeks. They will use a closer-by-committee in the meantime, likely consisting of Jacob Barnes, Matt Albers, Josh Hader and Jeremy Jeffress.
  • 03/29/18: The Giants have placed Mark Melancon (SF) on the 10-Day DL, retroactive to March 26th, with a strained flexor. There is no timetable for his return. Hunter Strickland will be closer while Melancon is out.
  • 03/29/18: The Rangers have named Keone Kela as the team’s closer.
  • 03/29/18: The Cardinals have agreed to terms with Greg Holland on a one-year, $14MM contract. He is expected to start the season with High-A Palm Beach. He could join the team in mid-to-late April. He is expected to be the closer, although it is unclear how long it will take him to claim the job.
  • 03/29/18: The Cardinals have placed Luke Gregerson (strained hamstring) on the 10-Day DL, retroactive to March 26th. Dominic Leone and Tyler Lyons are expected to share the closer duties with Greg Holland expected to take over at some point in late April.
  • 03/27/18: Diamondbacks have named Brad Boxberger as the team’s closer. Archie Bradley remains in a multi-inning setup role.
  • 12/20/17: Orioles closer Zach Britton expected to miss 4-6 months with a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. Brad Brach is in line to close games until Britton returns.
